On our recent trip back to Annapolis to take care of my father’s dogs, my lovely girlfriend Kelly had been fiending for a Ruben, so when doing a little look at main street we saw the sign in the Market House, and decided to try it for lunch the next day. We were both expecting a restaurant, but when we went in we learned that the Market House is a city owned premises where various food places rent and have stands, and the Galway Bay was one of those stands, where you get your food and take it outside to sit at little tables around the building or stand up at bars around the inside in between the food stalls. We were a little put off, but decided to give it a try.

We each got a Rueben and one big bucket of Fries, but they also have Fish and Chips, which they batter right in front of you and cook on the griddle. The Rueben was also done on the griddle and they put the corned beef, which was in stringy, but tasty pieces on the hot griddle and added the sauerkraut and let it cook, before adding cheese and putting it on rie bread, but instead of Russian dressing, they just used yellow mustard. The sandwich does not touch Victor’s for size, and it is abotu as greasy as could be, but it was pretty tasty. Certainly not the best Rueben I have ever had, but a decent one, if you could stand the grease (and it isn’t like Rueben’s are not already bad enough for you).

If you are ever on the main drag in Annapolis and want a Rueben this is not a bad solution, but next time I would hope to try the Rueben place that is up the main street further out of town.

Topz
10119 Riverside Dr.
Toluca Lake, CA 91602
(818) 766-9066

GOOGLE MAP

I had been looking forward to this place, which bills itself as having the LEANEST BURGERS IN AMERICA for a while, since one of the producers I have been working with mentioned it to me. And I have to say I was very disappointed. I was not too impressed at all, though I did like the syrups and formulas you can add to your soda, though they can’t be good for you, and don’t make up for the unimpressive and borring hamburgers and fries this place serves.

I had a 1/2 lb. Black Angus Burger on Wheat Bread which includes leaf lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles and their secret sauce, and an order of their Aero Fries, which are air baked with sea salt, and have only 14g of fat, compared to 22 in their normal fries. You can also serve your own ketchup and mustard, as well mayo, and they also have a garlic ketchup I was quite excited about, but honestly it had too much garlic in it, pretty much killing the taste of the ketchup completely, might as well just be a garlic spread.

The burger was OK, but nothing special. With a name like topz, I was thinking I would get to chose toppings, something like Fuddruckers, but it has nothing of the sort, you just get to put on your ketchup and mistard. And yes the burger was OK, and I guess it was lean, but it didn’t taste that good at all.

The fries, they may have been low fat, but I am sure that is why they were so mediocre. These fries suck. What a waste! And the garlic ketchup was way too much, it overpowered them. I used some on my hamburger, but will stick to normal ketchup thank you.

Kelly, meanwhile got some sort of mini burgers order, which was very weird. They had cut a patty in quarters, and gave her 2 of the quarters, but on a strange bread. This didn’t look so hot.

They also had a Pepsi Soda machine with Dr. Pepper, and a few different syrups you could try and add, and on the wall they had some recipes to try. Personally I added vanilla and cherry to my Dr. Pepper and it was excellent, the best thing there, but with that much sugar it must have been absolutely horrible for me. And I was hoping for a plain soda to mix the syrups with, not already created sodas.

••••

Pretty much this place is a let down. Not very good. If you are going to go for the calories of a burger, why not get a better one than this. And hell most places are. I like Carl’s Junior burgers better than this (though I do know they are not low calorie).

Certainly can’t be considered real greek food with the instant rice, and substandard pita bread, but still not that bad in a rush, if only because of the yogurt sauce. This is an OK fast food place, that is probably at least a little healthier than your local burger joint. And this one is at the new best buy/target mall, so if you are looking for a quick bite it won’t kill you.

I didn’t go for the fries, but the steak ka-bob combo, which has instant yellow rice, awful pita bread, that you can’t split, and some decent Tzatziki cucumber yogurt sauce. And the steak was pretty decent.

Kelly had a steak gyro, and she seemed to enjoy hers at least once she bathed the instant rice in lemon.

OK, though not great, with a strange mix of music coming over the speakers.

A quite large restaurant in what was obviously a strip mall at the North West corner of Victory Blvd and Clark Ave, this place has some great food, and is well worth checking out. In fact I can guarantee I will be going here again. Not only is this the best Philly Cheese Steak that I have had in Los Angeles, but the Pizza is pretty damn good thin crust New York style pizza. My only complaint is they seem to have forgotten my order, and so it took way too long, but I will give them a second chance.

I had the South Street Combo, for $8.50 which is a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich on a 9″ Italian Roll with American and Provolone cheese and saut

Right in downtown Burbank, you need to park in public parking, but this restaurant is quite tasty and incredibly cheap with huge portions.Well worth trying for lunch.

I have been here twice now, and had 2 excellent meals. One was the Chicken Katsu, which is golden brown deep fried chicken with curry sauce, with rice and all meals come with a strange noodle salad, with the meal being a decent equivalent of my favorite curry house meal (not as good, but not bad). The second was the Hawaiian Barbeque Mix which has BBQ Beef, BBQ Beef Ribs and BBQ chicken, again with rice and the noodle dish, and this is an incredibly tasty dish with so many tasty flavors that you will absolutely enjoy.

With prices well under $10 for a huge meal this place is pretty worth it and quite tasty. I will eat here again and often, and while it is probably quite fattening, it sure is good for the price!

I have to admit I have I have like Boba Cha (tea) since I first had it years ago at Noodle Planet in Westwood, and have since tried it at many places, and many different Lollicup’s and it is amazing how each one can be so different, like the ones in Chinatown are totally different than the ones in Korea town. Anyway, I really like this one, that has a huge selection of Boba, Taiwanese Ice, and even hot prepared snack foods.

Not everyone likes Boba, but I enjoy it, in fact I love it, and it seem my new girlfriend is an addict, after having it this weekend for the first time.

Anyway I love the Lychee Icee at this Lollicup which not only has Lychee Jelly (which they don’t charge extra for), but also boba (which you can get in big or small sizes). Yummy!! Now I always thought it was so sweet, but my girlfriend and her best friend seemed to think it was tart. Wow different taste buds. Anyway it rocks!

And if you haven’t had boba yet you should check it out, it is spreading out from just the Asian areas and can be found all over the place. And it comes sealled into a plastic glass, and you use a straw to break the plastic seal. Very ingenious and really helps if you are brining them to someone because they are not going to spill!

This place also has food and Taiwanese Ice which I always want to try, but have yet to do it as of yet as a Boba is usually quite enough!

There is even a Lollicup opening in Hollywood, which I need to go check out, and will write a seperate entry, because as I said since they are privately owned chains, Lollicup tends to always be different.
