Typhoon by Kwak Kyeong Taek (2006)

1 July 2006

This was the most expensive Korean film ever made, and it totally bombed and now I see why. What a waste of money. This movie is a stinker from start to finish. I mean I loved Chingu (Friend) from 2001, but this is just not a good film. The action is sub par, the acting stinks, as does the storyline. Pretty much this film is a total waste of time, not even a good popcorn film. Yuck!

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

The film starts with a US sea going tanker being taken by a group of pirates led by Sin (Jang Dong Gun). On the ship are nuclear electronics illegally made in Japan, in a plan to allow Nuclear missiles to be aimed at the Korean peninsula. The R.O.K. is worried so they call up a Navy Intelligence officer played by Lee Jeong Jae to find Sin and find out what is happening. The lieutenant heads to Thailand to track down the pirate and ends up torturing a man who knows about Sin, who is now back in the R.O.K., the Lieutenant returns to try and stop him and sees his face, but Sin gets away. Sin is then heading to Russia to get 30 tons of Nuclear waste which he plans on taking by tanker to the Republic of Korea and using a Typhoon let it out in balloons so it will kill the whole country. The lieutenant heads to Russia first and finds Sin’s surviving sister played Lee Mi Yeon who has been in Russia as a slave addicted to drugs, and with a bad heart and a brain tumor. Sin goes to get his sister and is re-united, and though they were not followed his entire teem is there to help him escape, but the sister is shot, and the lieutenant lets them go because he sees the sister is shot. He learned Sin’s back story that his whole family escaped to China and the Austrian embassy to get to the R.O.K. but the R.O.K. was just getting on terms with China so it denied them and they were returned to the D.P.R.K. where everyone but Sin and his sister were killed, but they were eventually separated. The lieutenant finds he understands his adversary. The US orders the R.O.K. to do nothing, but they send the lieutenant and a team to get on Sin’s tanker and stop him, and they go even though they know a US sub is going to sink it in order to get proof of the US nuclear plans. Sin ends up killing his wounded sister and tries to get his Thai pirate friends to leave, but they are killed, and Sin and the lieutenant face off with only 5 balloons having been released. Sin ends up killing himself and the boat is sunk, but the lieutenant miraculously made it and SIn never armed the balloons so they did no damage.

LAME!!! TOTALLY LAME! Bad action, bad acting, bad story. There is nothing redeeming here. SKIP IT!
