Tropicana Interlude by Shih Ma Shan (1969)
Yes further proof of my Ho Li Li obsession, I will eventually own every Shaw film she ever did, even these lesser ones like this one. I was hoping when I heard this was a musical for something like Inoue Umetsugu like, but alas I was not into that, and this is pretty cooky cutter, and not strictly a musical, in that their is usually a band on screen for most of the songs (except when they are driving, then the music for Lin Chong magically appears out of the air), and the songs just seem inserted not really having to do with the action, nor affecting the story at all. The story is predictable and quite lame actually, with Ho Li Li being mostly a spoiled brat through much of the film (at least of the parts which she is in, which is not enough for my tastes). Skip this film, it was a waste of celluloid for the most part, trying to make it’s money by showing off the actors as they our Malaysia and Singapore.
REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

Jan Ren (Lin Chong) has just returned to Singapore from school in Europe and had his high school sweetheart Song Yon Lan (Ho Li Li) picks him up and drops him at home, where he surprises his parents and tells them he changed from a business major into singing and has paid for his own way, returning their money, by working singing at a nightclub. His mother is distraut, but his father seems OK. Yong Lan gets Jan Ren a job with her at the travel agency she works at as a tour guide (forgetting his singing skills except as they can be fit into this cookie cutter story) and his first job is showing Ms Dong (Essie Lin Chia) who is a Hong Kong high school teacher and 4 of her students around Singapore and Malaysia. Their is trouble as one of the students A Rong (Lily Li) is hard to deal with and quickly falls for Jan Ren, and is just a brat. At a night club where they introduce Ms. Dong to Jan Ren’s uncle (and they hit it off perfectly), A Rong sneaks in, gets drunk and dances with an old lecher which causes a fight and Jan Ren to lose his job, and Yon Lan quits too. Jan Ren then decides to do the tour guide thing on his own and takes Ms. Dong and the kids to Malaysia to see the sights, where A Rong falls more for Jan Ren. Then the Uncle and Yon Lan show up to surprise them, but Yon Lan things she hears Ms. Dong confessing her love for Jan Ren, but really she is asking him to help her talk to his uncle. Things work out and they all decide to marry, but A Rong is sad and steals a car and runs, but they get her back, and we learn she is from a family that ignores her so Jan Ren takes her as a sister and they all head back to Hong Kong to get married, but not before seeing a traditional Malaysian wedding and having Jan Ren sing once more.
This one is really a stinker. They just wanted to travel around and see the sites in Malaysia and Singapore. Don’t waste your money on this one if you can help it.
