The Last Legion by Doug Lefler (2007)

A B movie with an A list cast and including the gorgeous ex miss universe Aishwarya Rai. The story is laughable, and their is no gore, and this is another attempt to recast the story of Exaclibur as having to do with Roman legions. There is some B movie fun here , as long as you ignore the laughable story, and the lack of any blood (obviously trying to make a movie for kids), and the awful performance of the kid Thomas Sangster. That and what is up with the gold masked evil dude in England. That is really damn lame! I mean come on! Is he a Kiss reject? An OK cheesy action kids film, that passes the time, but isn’t worth paying for.

The roman empire is in decline, and many emperors have not lasted more than a few weeks, and a new child emperor is to be crowned Romulus AUgustus (Thomas Sangster). A powerful Legionnaire Aurelius (Colin Firth) is called back from Africa with his followers for the crowning. Back in Rome a child attempts to steal his sword and he plans to cut his hand off, but is stopped by Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley) who is the mentor of Romulus, who turns out to be the boy. The first night of his rule, the goths betray Rome and attack, and Romulus’s parents are killed, and he is taken, and thanks to Ambrosinus not killed, but sent to a prison island. Aurelius meets with his congressman friend Nestor (John Hannah), who will get Romulus passage to the Ottoman empire thanks to the Ambassador Theodorus Andronikos (Alexenader Siddig) who lends one of his guards to save the kid, Mira (Aishwarya Rai).

Last Legion

They find out Mira is a beautiful and bad ass women and go to get Romulus from the Goths and Wulfila (Kevin McKidd). They manage to get Romulus after he has gotten the mystic sword of Julius Ceasar which has been lost for ages, and protected by a secret society from England where it was forged (and Ambrosinus has it’s symbol burnt into his chest). They head to meet Nestor, but he has betrayed them, and they kill him and attempt to escape to England, but only escape with the help of Mira who kills Theodorus, meaning she can never leave Aurelius’s side.

THey head to England to find a mythical lost legion, but it has been disbanded as it was left by Rome, and they find the remains of the troop who live in England. Wulfia has come to England and enlists the evil gold masked mad man Vortgyn (Harry Van Gorkum) who gave Ambrosinus his scar. So he attacks to get Romulus and the sword, and the legionaries who want to fight join Aurelius and they are attacked. The battle doesn’t go too well until Ambrosinus kills Vortgyn and the rest of the former legionaries attack, and they win, and settle down in England.

Romulus casts away his sword, and it lands in a stone, with moss on it, letting it read Excalibur. And Ambrosinus turns out to be Merlin training Romulus’s son, who is Arthur Pendragon, the man who would be king.

Stupid fun, and mostly good to enjoy the super hot Aishwarya Rai, who is so damn fine, and her dance skills make her seem quite a decent fighter. She looks to be the best fighter in the film. I actually hope she does more action.
