Starship Troopers 3: Marauder written and directed by Ed Neumeier (2008)

7 August 2008

I must really like Starship Troopers to have seen this, after the awful straight to video sequel, but the return of Casper Van Dien, and the casting of Jolene Blalock are what brought me here. And while this is low budget, and doesn’t look too great, this is a huge amount better than the last sequel, feeling much more like the original, even if it does feel like a slight upgrade to a Sci Fi Channel movie. The acting is only OK, but I still enjoyed this. Nothing amazing, but pretty enjoyable overall. And cool to finally see the Mechanized Mauraders, even if they don’t look too impressive here. At least this keeps the originals fascist sense of humor.

Casper Van Dien returns as Colonel Johnny Rico. The war with the bugs is going badly, and the new Sky Marshall Anoke (Stephan Hogan) who also has music videos rallying people to join the armed forces is coming to visit. The Sky Marshall arrives with an old friend of Rico’s, general Dix Hauser (Boris Kodjoe) and his girlfriend, and old girlfriend of Rico’s, the hottest captain in the fleet, Lola Beck (Jolene Blalock). Rico has a drink with his old friends and sends the Admiral around with his second in command. Some Farmers pick a fight with Dix, and he ends up fighting them, and then calling for their execution for sedition, and when Rico tries to stop him, he sets him for execution as well. Just then the base loses power, and the bugs get through, and start slaughtering soldiers. Dix gets the Sky Marshall back to the ship, and he leaves with Lola, though Dix stays behind to take over, though he is wounded. WHen the attack ends, Rico is taken back to Earth to be executed, while the Lola’s ship ends up dropping out of warp, and getting wasted, she and a few others, a religious stewardess Holly Little (Marnette Patterson) a doctor, the chef, and a mechanic who likes Holly as well as the Sky Martial go in an escape pod, and some marines gets out., but they crash onto a bug planet.

Lola leads them out to try to get to the marines and their weapons, but slowly realizes that the Sky Marshall is nuts, and is totally religious, and is ruining her command.

Back on Earth, Dix learns that Admiral Enolo Phid (Amanda Honohoe) is hiding the fact that the Sky Marshall has crashed, and is pretending he died on Earth, so he has Rico saved from his execution, and sets him up with the robot armor called Marauders to go and save not only the Sky Marshall, but also his girlfriend Lola, who is a bigger catch, because she has the secret location of the Militaries secret base.

The Admiral finds out, and takes Dix to the brain that Rico captured in the first film, and shows him video of the Sky Marshall becoming the brain’s slave. Dix then saves the Admiral from the brain, and they plan on making the Admiral the new Sky Marshall.

On the planet the people are getting picked off one by one, and finally the Sky Marshall is revealed to be insane, and worships the bug brain. They get taken by the brain, and it speaks through them, finally eating the sky marshall to get his information. Leaving only Lola and Holly, who finally gets Lola to worship god, and as they do, she sees a halo around Holly, that come and save them, and it Rico and his marauders. They come and save the day, and get back to space, and the Admiral uses a planet killer bomb to destroy the Alien, which takes up a huge portion of the planet.

Dix and Lola are married in a church, and Holly becomes a preacher as religion is allowed again, and Rico becomes a General and head of the Mauraders program.

Not amazing, but enjoyable enough. The effects are only OK, and the Aliens look only so so, but it is still allright, I enjoyed it’s silly fun.
