Star Trek the Animated Series by Hal Sutherland and Bill Reed (1973-1974)

3 March 2007

After the Original Star Trek was so unceremoniously dumped from TV, people wanted more, and this is what they initially got. Sure it is not the same as the original episodes, but since it features most of the original cast and some great stories these episodes are very worth watching even if the animation is fairly sub par, and the episodes are only half the length of the hour long originals. This series is in fact the one that introduced the hollodeck, which would become such an important facet of Star Trek the Next Generation.

Most of the original cast returned with William Shatner as Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, James Doohan as Commander Montgomery Scott, Deforest Kelley as Doctor Leonard McCoy, Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura, George Takei as Lit Hikaru Sulu and Majel Barrett playing a variety of roles in further adventures on the Enterprises historic 5 year mission.

Some highlights include the following,

YESTERYEAR has a return trip to the GUARDIAN OF FOREVER, and a trip that removes Spock from history, because it turns out he was supposed to be back in time, so he must return and save himself as a child, and has Mark Lenard return as Spock’s father Sarek.

MORE TROUBLE, MORE TRIBBLES is an incredible return to Trouble with Tribbles, with the return of Cyrano Jones (Stanley Adams) as well as the Klingon Captain Koloth.

MUDD’S PASSION has the return of my favorite Star Trek Nemesis, Harcourt Fenton Mudd (Roger C. Carmel) with Mudd having a strange potion that works as a love potion.

A very enjoyable show even with low quality animation, it is well worth seeing for all Star Trek fans.
