Singles ( ??? ) by Shin Min Kyung (2003)
REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…
Jang Jijn Young plays the ultra cute Na Nan a 29 year working in fashion, who has a horrible boss that always steals ideas and never takes any blame for his mistakes, and she never acts and does what she wants to, or what needs to be done at her work, or in her life. She gets broken up with by her useless boyfriend and is crushed, and then she is transfered at work to be the assistant manager at Chilli’s, but is too chicken to quit. Her best friend is Dong Mi (Um Jung Hwa) a slightly slutty woman, always brining men back to her apartment, who wants to start her own business but can’t get the money, not from her parent’s or any man in her life. Her roommate, and their other good friend is the way too nice Jung Joon (Lee Bum Soo), he is always annoyed by his roommate, and they always end up fighting, but really care for each other. Eventually a guy sees Na Nan, and learns she works at Chilli’s so he comes all the times with large groups, his name is Soo Heon (Kim Joo Hyuk), and he quickly falls for her, though she is initially reticent, he then quickly asks her to marry him, which she agrees to, but then he wants to take her to the US and she can go to fashion school, but she realizes she wants to do her career now, as she may be the manager at the restaurant soon. Meanwhile the 2 roommates sleep with each other, and Dong Mi becomes pregnant, but doesn’t tell Jung Joon, who is leaving for his home town. Dong Mi decides to keep to keep the baby, finds some money to start her own business, and Na Nan agrees to help and be a “father” and the 2 continue going as they turn 30, not where their dreams have brought them, but to where they are living, and with things going on.
I like the ending since neither girl gets married, thought they both could, and take the easy routes and Dong Mi doesn’t even tell jung Joon she is pregnant or the child is his, these are independent women, starting to take responsibilities for their own lives. Nice.
