Parasite Dolls by Yoshinaga Nayoyuki & Nakazawa Kazuto (2002)
5 July 2005I have always loved Bubblegum Crisis, though the original world the best (Crisis, Crash and AD Police), I just thought the boomers were much cooler being less organic than the 2046 version or the awful remake of AD police. Parasite Dolls is a semi sequel to the original AD police, being a new story about the AD police. And luckily it is a good one.
Parasite dolls follows a new division of the AD Police called Branch, in 3 adventures over a period of 3 years. Branch is a special section of the AD police set up by Takahashi Koji, a school mate of Basil “Buzz” Nikfest a cop who lost his wife to a boomer and was transfered to the AD police, but then killed a little girl he thought was a boomer, and so will no longer use his gun. His partner is a Boomer named Rod Kimball, and then Reiko Michaelson who is in love with Buzz. We have the story of Boomers going crazy, and a drug that makes them, though it is actually a pill made by Genom to fix defective boomers. Then a story of a very human prostitute boomer, whose full story isn’t explained before she dies after being chased by the Hooker Boomer Crusher. Then we have the final adventure involving a corrupt politician Sorime with a love of power and a hatred for Boomers who had been paying of Takahashi, but kills him when he puts a plan in place to destroy all Boomer production and most of Genom city using a plan that Buzz came up with in college.
Actually my biggest complaint is that this is obviously a one shot, and their isn’t more of it. I was enjoying this, maybe not quite as much as the Original AD police or as GITS: Stand Alone Complex, but still it is an excellent anime set in the BubbleGum Crisis Universe.
