Paranoia Agent 4 Sayonara Maromi by Satoshi Kon (2005)
So this is the end of the series. No idea why it took me so long to watch, but I am so glad I finally did. Kon really is a master of animation. Sure their are some threads left open. Really only 3 threads come together at the finish, as we learn the back-story of Tsukiko and the character she created Maromi, and of the two former detectives Karino and Mitushiro, and it all comes together as we learn more about Little Slugger. I highly recommend this series, and am so glad it is showing on the Cartoon Network.
REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

The mass hysteria over little slugger continues, but a woman who is very sick has little slugger appear, but she keeps him at bay, first by telling her story, then by telling him she is the same as Maromi. He husband turns out to be the older detective Karino, who is working as a security guard, and who is hating his life, and wants to escape, and with the help of a thief he once arrested he makes it into a paper cutout easier world of his younger years. There eventually he runs into Tsukiko and Maromi, and Tsukiko acts like the daughter he never had. Meanwhile detective Mitsuhiro dressed as a superhero tries to learn the truth, and tracks down Tsukiko’s father, and the bat he used to carry around after the incident when she was a child, and lied and said her puppy Maromi was killed by an attacker. Mitsuhiro eventually calls Karino back to the real world, as the world is overrun by a black goop that is the power of little slugger, which they must defeat, and to defeat it they make Tsukiko realize that she created Little Slugger when she allowed her puppy to get killed, and pretended an attacker did it., and that saves the world from the hypnosis.
Amazing. Kon is really something else, and up their with the greatest of anime directors, Miyazaki and Watanabe.
