Nabi ?? (Butterfly) by Moon Seung Wook (2001)

10 January 2005

This is an interesting digital film that is a science fiction film set in the near future, kind of in the vein of CODE 46 where the film is shot all in contemporary locations. It is a very well done and well acted low budget film. The pacing is slow, and may bore some viewers but I enjoyed it very much.

This film is set in the near future, and follows Anna Kim (Kim Ho Jung) who arrives from Germany in search of the Oblivion Virus, a virus that looks like a butterfly and completely erases a person’s memories, giving them a fresh start. She is guided in her search for the virus by a young pregnant girl named Yuki (Kan Hae Jung) and her orphaned driver K (Hyun Sung Kim). Yuki is in trouble because she is pregnant, and has lead poisoning (the world is completely poisoned, and you must take showers with special lotion if you are exposed, and that is how the virus came into existence). In this world these lead poisoned children have their children forcibly aborted, supposedly for the health of the kids, but more likely to stop the likelihood of deformed babies.

The
whole film is about finding a new start, and what can help you to do that, without having to give up your memories, or even find out you have already given up your memories before.

This film is very well done, and has one of the most disturbing child birth sequences, filmed in the edge of the ocean that I have ever seen.

I have the Limited Edition DVD, which has an extra DVD and includes a bunch of film cells from the film, though mine seems to be some sort of architecture, and none of the actors in the film. Still a cool inclusion. An interesting art house film.
