My Dream Boat by Doe Chin (1967)
6 July 2005I have to admit it I will own every Shaw film that starts Ho Li Li, so picking this up was a no brainer, thought it isn’t the best film. First off it can’t really figure out what it is. It starts off as a musical, with lyrical numbers, strangely all shot on set with horrible backdrops, and intercut with actual shots of the actors on location, which make the backdrops look so much worse. And while the film starts out happy, it turns in quite the tragedy by films end, though not so much for Ho Li Li, but Yang Fang’s character, and his entire family and the woman he marries, and the musical aspects of the film just go away.

Ho Li Li plays Tang Ke Hsin a young girl whose father is dead, and whose family is good friends with another family, where she grew up with Chia Wen (Yang Fang) who loves her dearly and wants to marry her, though he doesn’t know she sees him only as a brother. His father approves and so does his sister as well. They also have another friend who is sickly and poor who hangs out with them. A College friend of Chia Wen’s, Chi Yuan (Chin Han) is invited to their Christmas party, and not only does he get Ke Hsin’s present of a wooden boat in the draw, but they convince him to take them all out hunting. On the hunting trip Ke Hsin wants a red leaf on a tree, and Chi Yuan gets it for her, and she falls for him. On the return back she and Chi Yuan kiss, and then Chia Wen’s father asks her mom about getting them engaged, but Ke Hsin refuses since she doesn’t love him, but Chi Yuan leaves town without her.
