Millenium Mambo by Hsiao Hsien Hou (2001)

28 October 2005

Hmm, I have remembered wanting to see this film since I saw it’s poster at an art movie house, and the scary thing is I guess I have already seen it, though I didn’t realize it till about halfway through (the scene in Japan I remembered). I guess that means the film is pretty forgettable, and it is odd, kind of a slice of life piece on this girl who only parties, and has a loser for a boyfriend, who she stays with though she shouldn’t. It is actually an interesting look into these party people because I have known people like this who party all the time. It is well shot, but does drag because you are just watching these people do their thing, and it is told out of order with narration not always attached to what it is describing.

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

Shu Qi plays Vicky a loser of a girl who knows she can do better than her loser boyfriend Hao Hao (Tuan Chun Hao) who abuses her, doesn’t work, smells her and checks everything in her purse when she gets home, and even gets her to work as a hostess to pay their way (the best he can do is steal his father’s rolex and get arrested). The one light in her life is a the very nice Jack (Jack Kao) a triad who takes her under his wing when she gets kicked out and eventually invites her to Japan, where she doesn’t find him, but does get away from her boyfriend.

An interesting film, though not something I can recommend.
