Meet the Fockers by Jay Roach (2004)

20 April 2005

I have to admit this is not the kind of movie I would rush out to see, or even rent, but my girlfriend rented it, and I watched, and I must admit to laughing pretty hard, but mostly at the stupidity of the film and the performance of Dustin Hoffman. THis is an enjoyable, though stupid film, that is mainly really uncomforatble. It is fun to see the outtakes though and see how much De Niro is laughing hysterically trying to play his wound up ex-CIA straight man!

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

Greg Gaylord Focker (Ben Stiller) and his fiancee Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo) are taking her parents, the ex-CIA agent Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and Dina Byrnes (Blythe Danner) as well as Pam’s nephew Little Jack (Spencer and Bradley Pickren) down to meet the Fockers, Bernie (Dustin Hoffman) an ex lawyer and house husband and Roz (Barbra Streisand) a sex therapist. Of course all hell breaks loose, from having Greg’s foreskin fall in the fondue pot, having Isabel (Alanna Ubach) cater, and learning that Gaylord lost his virginity to her when he was 19. Their cats and dogs go crazy, and Bernie’s dog is flushed down the toilet in Jack’s mobile home, and Bernie has to rip off the toilet to save him. And of course their is only 1 toilet in the house. Also when getting the toilet fixed by Isabel’s son Jorge Villalobos (Ray Santiago), Jack becomes convinced that Jorge is actually Gaylord’s son. This is complicated by the fact that Pam is pregnant, but they don’t want Jack to know until they are married, so they want to move the wedding up to next month. Jack ends up giving Gaylord truth serum where he makes a fool of himself and his family at a party, but eventually things work out, and in fact Gaylord and Pam are married that weekend by Kevin Rawley (Owen Wilson) Pam’s ex-fiancee, and Jack is Fockerized and goes to seduce his sex starved wife.

A silly but enjoyable film.
