Lost Boys: The Tribe by P.J. Pesce (2008)

2 September 2008

I have wanted to see this film since I heard it was a possibility, and even with all it’s troubles and it’s straight to video release I really wanted to see it. Now honestly it is not a great film, but is an alright low budget horror film with lots of gore and nudity, and very little visual effects (mostly to badly change day photography into night photography). Honestly the worst part is Corey Feldman as Edgar Frog, whose part isn’t well enough explained, and only gets meaty in the scene in the credits or the two alternate endings. Feldman seems stilted, and since he is an anscillary character there isn’t enough of his story told. Still the young cast is pretty good, especially Autumn Reeser who is really cute, and Angus Sutherland who has an interesting look, and is pretty good. The story is of course really simple, but this is an enjoyable low budget horror fest, that looks to have been shot on pretty grainy 16mm.

The film starts with 4 guys led by Shane Powers (Angus Sutherland) sneaking onto an expensive property to surf, and being confronted by the vampire owner, who they bloodily kill and cut his head off. Then two siblings, an ex surfer named Chris (Tad Hilgenbrink) and his beautiful 17 year old sister Nicole (Autumn Reiser) move to the sleepy coastal town called Luna Bay with their aunt Jillian (Gabrielle Rose). Jillian rents them a shack instead of giving them a place to stay, but they have their life after their parents died. Chris looks around to find work as a surfboard shaper, as he can’t surf professionally after attacking another surfer on the circuit, and gets to the house of Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman) where he leaves his address as Edgar won’t answer the door. Chris sits by the ocean and ends up meeting Shane who invites him to a surf party later that night. Chris doesn’t want to go, but Nicole gets him to, and she quickly dumps him with a hot girl who shows interest in him named Lisa (Moneca Delain). Chris starts having sex with Lisa in a shower, while Nicole wanders around. A guy named Evan (Greyston Holt) wants to talk to her, but he is stopped, and Shane closes in on Nicole. He gives her a tower, and has her drink something out of his flask, which makes her feel funny, then he takes her for a ride on his motorcycle.

The other vampies, Kyle (Shaun Sipos), Erik (Merwin Mondesir) and Jon (Kyle Cassie) start messing around, and people start screaming, so Chris gets out of the shower to look for Nicole, and finds her returning on the bike, and drags her out.

Nicole says she is really sick, but Chris puts her to bed, but Lisa shows up, and he invites her in, and they start making out, but then he starts attacking her, so he thows her and her and she ends up impaled on antlers on the wall, and she turns to white and explodes. Then Edgar Frog shows up and tries to kill Nicole with a stake, with him saying she is a vampire (not mentioning that if they kill the head vampire before she feeds she will turn back), and Chris kicks him out, though Nicole had been attacking him. He talks to Nicole in the morning, and shows her that she has no reflection in the mirror, so he goes to talk to Edgar.

Edgar explains things, and plans to go hunt the vampires, but the only way to find their lair is for Chris to join them and then betray them. Nicole meanwhile has been called by Shane, and has joined him.

Chris goes to the cops, but is ignored, and the vampires come and get him, and get him to help prank the cops in a big chase wrecking their cars, and they want him to consider being a vampire.

The next night Chris goes to join them for a party on the beach, and drinks from a flask. At the beach there are girls waiting, and Shane leaves with Nicole to get her to feed and join them. The vampires attack the girls, and Chris kills one, before Edgar shows up and they run.

Edgar and Chris head to the lair, gearing up with all sorts of stakes, a garlic bolo and a holy water grenade launcher. They go and attack, and get split up. Nicole meanwhile is set to kill Evan, though she hesitates.

The other vampires are killed, and Chris fights Shane, but Shane has the upper hand, but Nicole stabs him through the heart and kills him, turning them both back to being human. Edgar says he will bill them, and drops them off, and Nicole tells Evan he can call her.

In the credits we see Edgar on a beach get confronted by Sam Emerson (Corey Haim) from the first film, who is now a vampire, and they attack each other.

There are also 2 alternate endings. One with Sam coming to Edgar to warn him that a master vampire is coming for him ,and he is there to help, and the vampire is Edgar’s brother Alan (Jamison Newlander). A second ending is extended of this, and for proof Sam shows Edgar that he has been bit, and then we seen Alan coming in a souped up car.

Not great, but enjoyable enough.
