Late Night Buffet by Jim Henson Productions

22 July 2006

I heard about this online and managed to get 3 tickets to the taping of the pilot episode of this new adult talk show by Henson featuring new puppets for TBS. Of course my girlfriend and their sister barely got in because they showed up late, and I didn’t get to sit with them, but it was such a joy to see a Henson show being made, and get to see how the Puppets worked. The show was enjoyable though ti could have used better guests, and maybe some more puppets to liven it up, I liked the band leader but she was not sued enough. The funniest parts were the commercials with the 2 lead puppets and the vibrating chair and food and booze they fed the vests.

The 2 hosts are the puppets Augustus Pfiffle (by Brian Henson who is looking more an more like his father every day, along with a helper) the straight man and Delbert Kastle (Bill Barretta and his assistant) with band leader Gina Cappellini and her 3 monkeys who make up the rest of band and a human waiter who brings out the food on a cart. Their were also 2 human guests in this episode and I assume for the second episode they taped that night.

The show is quite enjoyable though a bit strange. It could have been a little funnier and I think could use more puppets or maybe be edgier. In fact the funniest stuff happened off camera, when Delbert pretended the alien was bursting from his chest, and other such moments which were much edgier than the on the air stuff.

This was fun to watch, and interesting to see how they can only go for about 7 minutes because of how heavy the puppets are, and it was fun to see the whole process, plus the warm up man was really hysterical.
