Last Exile Episodes 18-26 by Chigara Koichi (2003)

It took me a long time to get from the start of this to the middle, but from their I just powered through it all in 2 days. Gonzo really proved it’s meddle with this one. I really enjoyed this anime, and maybe it is just the joy of flying and the really cool vanships that they use to fly, but this was a most impressive anime to me.

There is always some sense of depression when you finish a really good series and it is over for good, the same with finishing a good book, you rush to finish, then are sad that you are done.

Review contains spoilers…

Princess Sophia gives Nestor the leader os Dusis a copy of the letter that Hamilcal Valca and George Head tired to deliver to Dusis through the grand stream, and he agrees to an alliance, and to allow Sophia to be empress of both peoples, and he gives her a map of the grand stream and recordings of exile. Moran meets Donya a soldier and decides to remain behind with her to train and be a marksman again. Alex heads Silvana for Sophia’s coronation, but rose petals fall from the sky from a descending guild ship, but the ship gets away. Sophia the empress returns to Silvana to discuss the plan. Sophia assures Klaus she will protect Alvis. And the Silvana heads for the Grand Stream. The Silvana and the Urbanus methodically search for the exile using sound torpedoes and soundings (much like a submarine running silently). Alvis makes a birthday cake for Dio, and the mechanics throw him a party, but the Exile is located and everyone is scrambled, Klaus with Dio as his navigator. Alex gives Sophia the mysteriums and the guardianship of exile, and now he is free from the emperors control. Claus and Dio head back to the Silvana after successfully capturing exile, only to find the ship has been attacked by Delphine and the star ships, and they find her, who takes them and Alvis. Alex tries to stop them, but is captured. Delphine forces Dio into the ceremony of allegiance, where he seems to lose who he was and become subjugated to the will of Delphine. Delphine has Dio fight with other successors, who he kills, and she has Alex bound in a cross with roses secreting a truth serum to get the mysteriums to activate Alvis and Exile, but he only knows 2 of them. Then we get the past of Dio and Luciora where Dio took him as a friend though he was only a servant to Delphine. Dio helps Claus and Alvis escape with Dio, who is his friend,a nd he gives Alvis a hat from Dio and a necklace to communicate with the Silvana. Luciora makes it to Delphine’s chamber and kills Sicada his brother, but accepts Delphine’s ring asking her to free Dio, but the ring kills him.

Claus is able to escape, and wakes up at a field hospital, leaving with Alvis, and leaving Dio, who escapes and follows. Claus and Alvis return to his old house, and Alvis gets Lavi’s vaigator notebook so she can help him run the vanship. Claus’s vanship friends destroy many of the guild ships with their Vanships. The communicator that Luciora gave to Alvis works and lets them talk to Silvana, and they head for a bunch of rendevous with fresh Vanships, finally getting to Lavi and Claus’s original Vanship which they will use to cross the grand stream, but Dio has followed them and is trying to kill them, though he eventually regains his original personality and realizes that Luciora is dead, and he is killed by the grand stream.

Exile is attacking both fleets, though leaving Delphine’s ship alone. Sophia launches a final attack with Urbanus leading the way to destroy Delphine. Alex still trussed up manages to grab and kill Delphine as Sophia destroys her ship, but the Silvana can hear Alex as he dies saying Sophia’s name. Claus brings Lavi and Alvis to the exile and activates it, which destorys the grand stream and cleans up the planet, making Alvis’s dream of wheat fields come true. Claus and Lavi find their father’s vanship inside of exile with the message. Exile is then used to travel to a blue planet with Claus, Lavi, Alvis, Tatiana, Holy and Donya. And we see Tatiana and Alistia teaching childen how to fly vanships, and Moran with a child alive and well. And their is peace.

Wow, I am sad this is over, and don’t find Gonzo’s latest Gantz to be nearly this good, at least not yet, though this one took me a while to really get into. I did love it though. I highly recommend this series.
