Ju-On: The Grudge 2 by Shimizu Takahashi (2003)

11 January 2005

Well I wouldn’t call this a good film, or even a scary film, but I certainly liked it better than the first one. It has an interesting structure decent performances, and I actually liked the ending. This film could actually be called, Ju-On the Rebirth.

This time we follow the beautiful horror film actor Kyoko (Sakai Noriko, who gives the best performance of the film. and serves to tie all the disparate elements together). The film starts with she and her fiancee in a car, and they hit a cat, then the ghost child grabs the wheel and they crash, and Kyoko loses her baby (or does she?). Then at the hospital we learn the fiancee is comatose, and that Kyoko has lost her baby, but soon after we learn that she is still pregnant, and we have seen the ghost child with his hand on her stomach. We learn that she was at a film shoot for a horror tv show where they visited the grudge house, and each person who was there is dying, first the reporter, then the hair stylist (Killed by a wig, now that is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen), and then the director seeks out Kyoko. An at the end we find out the secret of her pregnancy, and have an excellent ending which really serves the film well.

Not a great film, or even a scary one, but I enjoyed it.
