InnerSpace by Joe Dante (1987)
6 November 2008A classic movie I grew up with, and was quite surprised to see just how well it held up watching it now. In fact the effects are pretty damn fantastic. This film is a great action film, as well as comedy and romance thrown in too. Just an all around fun movie, with great effects, a great score by Jerry Goldsmith. SUch an enjoyable film, this deserves a nice Blue-Ray transfer! You should see this one again, because it is a really fun film all the way around.
The film starts with Navy Pilot Lieutenant Tuck Pendleton (Dennis Quad)getting wasted at a party, and getting kicked out by his old boss Pete Blanchard (Harold Sylvester) and must be taken home by his reporter girlfriend Lydia Maxwell (Meg Ryan). The next morning Lydia sneaks out, and he runs out of the shower to stop her, but she is on her way. We cut to 3 months later, and Tuck is working on experimental miniaturization project where he will be shrunken and injected into a rabbit. Meanwhile we meet Hypochondriac and grocery store clerk Jack Putter (Martin Short) who is the cornerstone of his doctor’s practice, and who is told he must go on vacation to calm down and stop freaking out. At the lab, some terrorists attack after Tuck has been shrunk, and the project leader Ozzie Wezler (John Hora) escapes and runs to a mall, being chased by the crazy snap on killer Mr Igoe (Vernon Wells) and before he dies he injects Tuck into Jack, and Tuck starts his work, attaching a camera to Jack’s eye and a device to listen to Jack’s ear. And he soon realizes that he is in a man, and Jack thinks he is possessed.
REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

Jack eventually starts believing Tuck and finds that Tuck will run out of oxygen in a day, so they must get back the stolen chip so he can be saved and re-enlarged or Tuck will die.
Meanwhile Mr. Scrimshaw (Kevin McCarthy) and his girlfriend Dr. Margaret Canker (Fiona Lewis) who worked in the lab, are sending Igoe to go and capture Jack and get the chip back.
Jack finds Lydia and eats with her, when Igoe comes and captures him, putting him in a meat truck. Jack tries to escape, and gets into Tucks car which Lydia is driving,
The two then start to follow a known technology dealer named The Cowboy (Robert Picardo, the Doctor form DS9), and much silliness ensues, with Tuck giving Jack the Cowboy’s face, but when Jack starts to freak, his face changes back, and they are taken and locked up. Jack asks for time alone with Lydia and they kiss, and Tuck can’t reconnect with Jack, but finds a baby, but realizes he is in Lydia.
Mr Igoe is then put in another pod, and put into Jack to get the chip and escape, but Lydia saves Jack and they shrink Scrimshaw and Canker down to 50% size before getting the missing chip and headinb back to the lab to re-enlarge Tuck.
Tuck muyst fight with Mr Igoe, and destroys his pod, but Igoe ejects and uses his drill hand to try and kill Tuck, but Tuck makes Jack freak out, and churns his stomach acid, and Mr. Igoe is killed.
They get to the lab, and with no time to spare, Tuck is re-enlarged and saved.
Tuck then marries Lydia, get this, AT WAYFAIRER’S CHAPEL WHERE KELLY AND I ARE GETTING MARRIED!!!! SO COOL!!!! As they drive off, Jack sees Cowboy following Tuck and Lydia with Scrimshaw and Canker in a suitcase and Jack quits his job and runs off to save the day!
