I Love You Again by W.S. Van Dyke II (1940)

28 July 2008

More fun from Loy and Powell and Van Dyke who directed the first 4 Thin Man films. This is a really fun love story, because it is about a man who gets hit on the head and realizes he was a con man, and then when he meets his wife, decides to make her fall for him again, and he himself falls for her. More fun between Loy and Powell, who have such amazing on screen chemistry. This is a great one! Highly recommended.

Larry Wilson (William Powell) is on a vacation cruise, and annoying all the other passengers with his penny pinching and refusal to drink, and talking constantly about his small town of Habersville, Pennsylvania. When a drunk on the boat, “Doc” Ryan (Frank McHugh) challenges Larry, and they both fall off the boat, Larry is hit on the head, and when he awakens he realizes his name is George Carey and he is a con man who was hit on his head 10 years before on a train, and became someone else. When he checks his bank account he finds a lot of money, so he and Doc decide to go and scam the bank out of his money. When they arrive though they are met by Kay Wilson (Myrna Loy), Larry’s lovely wife, who quickly asks for him to grant a divorce, because Larry ignored her, and cared more for all the town things, and she goes to her new fiance. The bank guy then shows up with Larry’s $5000, advance, which puts them $4000 overdrawn, as all the money is for the Community Chest and Anti-Vice crusade. George then decides to use the land he has to run an oil scam, but he realizes he needs his wife to do it, and makes her agree to wait 6 weeks for a divorce.

George and Doc bring in another con, Duke Sheldon (Edmund Lowe) to make it look like there is some oil, and he buys up all the land around there, so he can make some money. And then George leads his boy scout troop there, and makes sure the boys see it so they will tell their fathers who have money.

Meanwhile back at home George is romancing Kay all he can, and she can’t believe it, it is like he is a different man, and she even begins to forget about her new fiance. And when Kay admits she loves him, and will forget about the new guy, George realizes he can’t be part of the plot anymore. The problem is that Duke wants his money no matter what. So when Duke confronts him and the town elders who want the land, he ends up with a conk on the head, and it is amnesia all over, but now he is back to being Larry. The elders and Duke run off to make their deal, but Kay is distraught, that is until George shows that he was just using it to get out of the deal, so he could stay with her.

Really a great romantic comedy, and one that really has a different story-line going on, making it really a joy to watch!
