Hot Fuzz by Edgar Wright (2007)

22 April 2007

These guys are absolutely brilliant, and some of the funniest guys in film period. Simon Pegg and Edward Wright are brilliant writers, and the on screen team of Pegg and Nick Frost are brilliant. You can tell these 3 are best friends, and are also some of the best filmmakers around today. SHAUN OF THE DEAD is absolutely brilliant, and they have kept their end up with this film, which is absolutely outstanding. I think I might have enjoyed Shaun better, but this is certainly a close second. This is one of the most enjoyable films of the year, and an absolute must see. I picked up the HD DVD just before the format died, and I have to say it looks fantastic. Damn it makes me never want to watch DVD again.

Seargant Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is the ultimate cop in London, kicking ass and taking no beef. He has more colors by a factor of 10 than any other cop on the force, so his boss, and all the higher ups, Net Sergeant (Martin Freeman), Inspector (Steve Coogan) and Metropolitan Chief Inspector Kenneth (Bill Nighy) decide to transfer him to the smallest and safest town in England. Angel shows up in town, and before he even reports for duty, he arrests a local drunk Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) and cleans out the local bar of it’s underage drinkers. The next day at work he meets the chief, Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent) and his son, Angel’s new partner, Danny Butterman. Angel doesn’t fit in, he can never turn off, which is also the reason his ex gave up on him, and he is left with only his plant. The thing is their seem to be a lot of accidents in this award winning little town. And Nicholas has to try to fit in with the strange gang of local cops that he has to deal with every day.

Instantly Angel becomes suspicious of the local supermarket owner, Simon Skinner (Timonthy Dalton) who seems to make too many comments, and keeps showing up at the location of local accidents.

Slowly Nicholas Angel and Danny Butterman become friends, and Danny shows Nicholas his collection of action movies, from Point Break to Bad Boys II. And Nicholas becomes more suspicious, as their are 2 people are beheaded in a car accident, someone is blown up, and finally a women is stabbed in the throat in front of Angel with her own shears. Angel can’t seem to catch up with the bad guy though, and when he brings the police force to confront Skinner, he is made the fool, as Skinner’s leg is not hurt where the guy he was chasing was hurt. Frank Butterman tells him that is what happened to the last guy who was transfered from the city, and Nicholas really starts to think he is losing it, until he returns to his hotel room and is attacked by Skinner’s giant and retarded cart boy. Nicholas survives, and when Frank arrives he leaves him to watch the bad guy, and goes to get Skinner, but that is not all he finds.

Nicholas finds that the entire local council is in fact behind the killings, and it turns out that the Chief Inspector is behind it all, from when his wife died when trying to get the town to win the best town award. And that is the reason they have all been doing the killings, to make sure the town wins the award another year in a row. They all chase him, and Nicholas falls into tunnels under the church, and finds all the bodies of the dead people the town council have killed, and when he tries to escape, he can’t because the cart boy, and his partner Frank shows up, and Frank shoots him, and takes him away in his trunk. Frank lets Nicholas out, as he had set him up with a notebook with ketchup in it. Frank didn’t know about the killings, but does not want to harm his dad, still he lets Nicholas leave and head back to London, but on the way he goes to a gas station and sees an entire rack of DVD’s of action films, and Nicholas realizes he can’t leave.

Nicholas returns and gets the entire arsenal of weapons that they had confiscated (along with a land mine) from a local farmer, and heads into town on a horse, just as the judges for the contest are set to arrive. And Nicholas Angel starts fighting the town council, but would have been in trouble if not for Frank showing up, and lending aid, and the two take on the whole town, from the priest and on. And Frank and Nicholas head out in a car chase after Skinner and Butterman senior, and manage to catch them after a long fight and battle.

Back at the police station, the head of the neighborhood watch comes out with a huge cannon and is going to kill Angel, but Danny takes the bullet, and the mine ends up going off and leveling the station. And the Metro Inspectors show up to get Angel to take his old job back because the arrest rate is down, but he wants his new job now, and we cut to a year later and Angel is now the chief of police, working with Danny and the rest of his misfits in his new spiffy police car.

•••••

Such an incredibly fun movie, these guys are some of the best comics around, perfectly blending comedy and serious drama and action. I can’t wait for there next film, they are absolutely brilliant, and this is a must see.
