He Was Cool ??? ???? by Lee Hwan Kyung (2004)

29 October 2004

This is an impressive first outing for first time director Lee Hwan Kyung. I was hoping this wasn’t just another Korean teen comedy, and I was proved right this time. While this film is at times silly, and also melodramatic, it also has a good story, interesting characters, good fight scenes, and high drama. What more could you ask for. This Region 3 DVD is well worth picking up.

Han Ye Won (played by Jung Da bin in her first role) is a High School teen at an all girls school. she sees a post on her school web site warning the girls to stay away from someone named Ji Eun Sung (played by Song Seung Heon). In the opening scene he kicked the hell out of 5 guys who were picking on 2 girls from the school, and he literally tosses his manga in the air, knocks out the last guy, and grabs the manga again before it hits the ground. The girls drool, and that is when he gets angry at them and posts the message. He is too cool for words.

Eun Sung gets Ye Won’s phone number and harasses her, and they end up in the same hair salon, and he chases her. Then he waits for her outside of her school, she attempts to escape over the wall, but lands on Eun Sung and accidently kisses him. No things have changed, and they have to be married because he doesn’t let anyone touch him, and no one has every kissed him (you find out later just why).

The relationship starts out twisted, but ends up with them loving each other, and pissing off the girl who has loved Eun Sung for 3 years. And things get more complicated when a former friend of Eun Sung shows up, and is also in love with Ye Won.

The film starts off so lighthearted, but doesn’t always stay that way when we learn why Eun Sung doesn’t like to be touched, and why he has become the bad boy that he has become.

I loved this film. It was great fun, and very enjoyable. And for once the leads kissed early in the film (yes the first time by accident but not the second time). And it is very light hearted, I laughed hysterically when she bounces way over the wall, sees who is below her, and she stops in the air, trying to go back, but is unsuccessful.

I have to admit to enjoy many of these comedies, though some are light and I wouldn’t recommend them to others, but this film I highly recommend, it was a great time, and the fight scenes were great too.
