God of Gambler’s Returns by Wong Jing (1994)

17 February 2005

Now I have finally seen the God of Gambler’s sequel. The return of Chow Yun Fat as Ko Chun (I know there are other God of Gamblers films, but without Chow Yun Fat as Ko Chun), and in all of Wong Jings silliness, with excessive violence as well. And what a cast.. Who isn’t in the movie. Though what is up with Tony Leung Ka Fai’s voice?

Review Contains Spoilers:

Chow Yun Fat returns as Ko Chun who has been retired for 4 years and his living in France with his Pregnant Wife (Cheung Man), but the idealism won’t last. Wu Xing Guo wants to be the God of Gamblers so he murders Ko Chun’s wife, by cutting out his unborn son. Ko Chun views to her not to gamble or reveal himself as God of Gamblers for one year. With 15 days to go Ko Chun meets a Taiwanese mob boss played by Blacky Ko Sau Leung, who is actually the leader of Wu Xing Guo, and on a boat trip to Taiwan the boss and everyone is killed except Ko Chun and the bosses son Xie Miao (the young martial artist from MY FATHER IS A HERO with Jet Li). Ko Chun vows to take the boy to his sister played by Chingmy Yau Suk Ching, but first they end up on the mainland being chased by the police officer played by Elvis Tsu. Ko Chun ends up with Hong Kong hustler brother and sister team Tony Leung Ka Fai and Wu Chien Lien, and with Elvis escape to Taiwan. Wu Xing Guo captures the boy and Wu Chien Lien and Ko Chun uses Tony Leung Ka Fai to pretend as the God of Gamblers until he can admit to it. Wu Xing Guo kills Wu Chien Lien, and Ko Chun finally goes to gamble, but Wu Xing Guo is using a physic to change Ko Chun’s cards, but this is the god of Gamblers, so of course he has to win.

This movie is silly fun, Chow Yun Fat is totally cool, though the rest of the cast gets silly, including some martial arts gambling with Chingmy Yau Suk Ching and Wu Zing Guo. Not amazing, but still totally fun.

Thanks to my friend Jeff Briggs for lending this to me, and finally it can’t be said that I haven’t seen the GOD OF GAMBLERS movies, or at least the ones with Chow Yun Fat.
