Explosive City by Sam Leung Tak Sum (2004)
Good to know that someone is still making good action thrillers in Hong Kong. Not the best Hong Kong has ever offered, but still a decent and engaging police thriller. And besides I always like Alex Fong Chun Sun, Simon Tam Tat Wah and Sonny Chiba.

A governement officer (Joe Cheung Tung Cho) visits Hong Kong, and is targeted for assasination by Jade (Hisako Shirata), she is stopped by Cheung (Simon Yam Tat Wah) and ends up in a coma. CID Yiu Tin Ming (Alex Fong) is assigned to investigate the case, but he has been betrayed. He is forced to watch his wife being killed on video, and if he doesn’t do what the bad guys want they will kill his son, so he shoots Jade and escapes with her, since she was wearing a bulletproof vest she is alright. Cheung then sets to hunt down and get Yiu at any cost. Yiu must team up with the amnesiac Jade to get back his son from the Otosan, played by Sony Chiba. He is a killer who kidnaps young children and brainwashes them into fierce killers.
The film is very enjoyable with some good twists and turns, that aren’t too obvious. The worst thing is the language, which follows many Hong Kong block busters in having each character speak their native languages and everyone else understands them. Of course even worse in this is that Hisako Shirata seems to be dubbed into Cantonese when talking to Alex Fong, yet speaks Japanese to everyone else, and the change of voice and dub isn’t too appealing. And everyone around Sonny Chiba seams to speak a different language, but they all understand each other.
This is a decent, though not great police thriller, that should be a good watch for anyone missing the good old days in Hong Kong. Nothing Great, but still certainly worth checking out.
