Doctor Who Story 140: The Two Doctors, Directed by Peter Moffatt, Written by Robert Holmes (1985)
I have never been a fan of the surly 6th Doctor, played by Colin Baker, but I have to say the more I watch him, the more I enjoy him, even if his blue outfit wouldn’t have clashed so bad (ha!). And his interaction with Peri (Nicola Bryant) does make for some interesting times, as the Doctor has never been quite so condescending, though she always does surprise him. And to add the Second Doctor in the mix certainly makes for some good fun. I love the crossovers with multiple doctors! I also love the whole Doctor becoming Andorgum thing, which makes for some great fun with not only Troughton, but also Baker. And this was the last appearance of Troughton and Hines, so that makes this even more interesting, as Troughton was still amazing as the second doctor! A very enjoyable adventure all the way around.
The Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companion the Scotsman Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines) land in the Tardis on the space Station Camera in the Third Zone, having been sent by the Timelords. They need to talk to the station director Dastari (Laurence Payne). They arrive and meet the station cook Shockeye (John Stratton) who is an Androgum, a primitive and violent race, who tend to like to eat fresh flesh, be it whatever race they meet. Shockeye offers to buy Jamie from the Doctor for a meal, though the Doctor of course refuses, and goes to see Dastari, but as they go, they hear the Tardis dematerialize. This is seen by the augmented Adrogum Chessenne (Jacqueline Pearce) who has plans of her own involving poisoning the scientists on the station, as well as someone named Stike who will be arriving soon. The Second Doctor tells the Dastari that the Time Lords want the time experiments of Kartz and Reimer to be stopped. The Time Lords are officially neutral, so they have sent the Doctor to add deniability. Destari introduces the Doctor and Jamie to Chessene, but the Doctor is immediately worried that no changes can completely change her Androgum nature. Stike (Clinton Greyn) arrives, and he is a Sontaran, and arrives with 3 battle cruisers. Chessene knocks out the defenses and opens the docking bays. The Doctor warns Dastari that the time experiments are on the verge of threatening space and time, but Dastari accuses the Time Lords of not wanting another race to have the power of Time Travel. Dastari faints, and Energy weapons can be heard. The Doctor orders Jamie to run, and then a Sontaran aims his gun at the Doctor.

Perpugilliam “Peri” Brown (Nicola Bryant) and the second Doctor (Colin Baker) are on a fishing trip, and when they return to the Tardis, the Doctor collapses, at the same moment that Jamie sees the second Doctor in a glass chamber in extreme pain under the watchful eyes of a Sontaran. When the Sixth Doctor awakens, he has had a vision of his second incarnation being killed, which is impossible, because he is alive, but also worries that he may have died in a temporal anomaly. So the Doctor decides to go talk to his old friend Dastari about it.
They materialize on Dastari’s station, but is dark, and filled with the bodies of the dead scientists. The Station computer threatens the Doctor, and says it was caused by Timelords, it them tries to kill the Doctor and Peri by depressurizing, and then by heat and cold. They manage to get to Destari’s office, where he finds out about the Timelord’s objections to the Kartz-Reimer experiments, but refuses to believe the Timelords killed all these people. Peri thinks the Timelords are being frames. They go into the ducts to try and shut down the ships computer.
On Earth Chessene, Shockeye and the Sontaran Major Varl (Time Raynham) land at a Spanish Hacienda, killing it’s owner, and set up a homing beacon.
An English actor working as a waiter named Oscar Botcherby (James Saxon) and Anita (Carmen Gómez) are on the grounds looking for butterflies, and see a Sontaran ship come in and land, and thinking there is an accident go to look, and see the Second Doctor being carried into the house.
The Sixth Doctor is knocked out by the computer, while Peri is attacked by a humanoid in rags, and her scream wakes the Doctor. The Humanoid turns out to be Jamie, who has been hiding on his own for some time, and under hypnosis he tells the Doctor what happened, and the Doctor realizes it is the Sontarans.
Back at Destari’s office, the sixth Doctor sees Peri in pain in the glass tube, but then it chanes to Dastari and the Second Doctor, when Peri and Jamie arrive, he says it is an allusion to make people think the Doctor was dead, and it had been left to record so it had recorded Peri.
The Doctor realizes his second self is being held captive, probably so Dastari can get the symbiotic nuclei which allows them to travel through time, and give it to the Sontarans. He goes into a trance to hear from his second incarnation and hears the 25 bells of the Great Cathedral of Seville.
Dastari has the Second Doctor drugged and tied up. They are staging on earth because it is a convenient staging ground for a Sontaran attack on another system, and because Sockeye wants to eat young human flesh.
The Tardis arrives, and they meet Oscar and Anita who think it is a real police box, and they lead them to the hacienda.
Dastari tells the second Doctor of his plans to isolate the symbiotic nuclei by dissecting the doctor and give it to Chessene, and the Doctor calls him mad, because she will never be above her Androgum nature, which will make her completely evil and all powerful. The Sixth Doctor asks Peri to create a distraction, while he and Jamie sneak in to the Hacienda. Peri pretends to be an American student, but Chessene is suspicious, and gives her to Shockeye to cook as a meal.
The Sixth Doctor finds the Kartz-Reimer module, which is based on Time Lord tech, and explains to Jamie that once it is used by a TImelord and his symbiotic nuclei, the Rassilon Imprimatur, it will be safe for anyone to use, and the Sontarans hear this.
Shockeye knocks Peri out and takes her to the Kitchen.
Strike threatens to kill Jamie unless the Sixth Doctor primes the module, and he does it. Strike is going to kill Jamie anyway, but he stabs Strike and he and the doctor escape upstairs, where they find the second Doctor. Shockeye shows up with Peri, and the Sixth Doctor and Jamie hide, while the Second doctor feigns unconsciousness.
Now that Chessene knows that a second timelord is involved, she gets Dastari to implant Andrugum genetic material into the second Doctor, and he can help them eliminate the Sontarans, but they don’t know that the module is primed, and Strike has orderd the destruction of his battlecraft.
Chessene stops Shockeye from eating Peri to bring him to the basement and Datari so they can get it into the Second Doctor. The Sixth Doctor revives Peri, and tells them that he has in fact taken the briode nebuliser, so the device will not work for them.
Dastari makes the Second Doctor 50% Androgum, and when Shockeye awakens in a rage, he finds the Second Doctor is much like him, and the two are ravenous, and head to the local town to eat all they can!
Dastari attacks the Sontarans with acid, killing Varl, but Strike manages to escape and get into the Module, but it does not work, and wounds him further. He heads to his craft just as it self-destructs.
Peri and the Sixth Doctor head to town to try and cure the Second Doctor before it begins to affect him. Chessene and Dastari also follow knowing if they don’t stabilize the Doctors surgery he will reject the Andrugum infusion. The Second doctor and Shockeye head into central Seville, and go to Oscar’s restaurant, ordering literally everything on the menu, and when Oscar tries to get them to pay, Shockeye kills Oscar, just as the Sixth Doctor who has started to act more Androgum arrives. Shockeye runs, and the Second Doctor slowly reverts to his former self, leaving the Sixth Doctor normal again as well.
They leave the restaurant with the distraught Anita, and get found by Chessene and Dastari, who bring them back to the the Hacienda at gunpoint.
Chessen and Dastari find that the Nebuliser is missing on the Kart-Reimer module, and they replace it, and force Peri to ride in it, and it works. Chessene allows Shockeye to eat Jamie, who takes him to the kitchen.
When alone, the Sixth Doctor confirms that the Nebuliser was sabotoged to only work once, so it will not work again, and he gets the key, and frees them, and runs to save Jamie. Shockeye chases the doctor, but he finds Oscar’s cyanide killing jar for butterflies, and uses it to kill Shockeye (wow, violent), but not before being cut by Shockeye and his knives.
When Chessene sees the Doctor’s blood on the ground, she falls to the ground and starts to lick it, finally making Dastari realize that no matter how much he changed her, she is still all Androgum, and he frees the second Doctor and his companions. Chessene then kills Dastari, and as she turns to shoot Peri, Jamie throws a knife into her wrist.
Chessene runs to the Kart-Reimer module and gets in it, but it explodes, disintegrating it’s occupant.
The Second Doctor uses a Stattenheim remote control (which the Sixth Doctor wants) to call his Tardis, which arrives and takes him and Jamie away. The Sixth Doctor walks with Peri to his Tarids, and tells her that from now on he is a vegetarian!

A really fun episode, especially seeing Troughton get to play as an Androgum! Utterly fun! And the sixth Doctor is starting to grow on me, even if he is annoying in his superiority. Still quite a fun adventure.
