Doctor Who Story 037 The Tomb of The Cybermen by Morris Barry (1967)

12 November 2006

After watching the New Doctor who episode with the return of the Cybermen my friend Chris Melrose recommended me this original episode of Doctor Who, which is supposedly the earliest complete Cybermen adventure. Honestly I don’t think that I had ever seen a Patrick Troughton Doctor Episode, nor a Doctor Who in black and white, and I have to say I enjoyed the experience. Sure the FX are cheesier, but Troughton is an enjoyable Doctor, and I liked seeing a Scottish sidekick in a kilt no less.

In this Episode the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) along with Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Decorah Watling) head to the planet Telos homeworld of the extinct Cybermen, where a group of Earthlings are doing an Archeological dig to find the mysteries of the ancient race, and the Doctor reluctantly helps them.

The men include the captain of the ship Captain Hopper (George Roubicek), and the expedition is led by Professor Parry (Aubrey Richards), but the archeologists are betrayed by the financiers the scientist Eric Klieg (George Pastell) and Kaftan (Shirley Cooklin). These 2 plan to revive the frozen Cybermen and make a deal to get their technology and power, though of course the Cybermen don’t make deals or promisses and turn on them, and it is up to the Doctor to stop the Cybermen and the evil of Klieg and Kaftan as well as their strong servant Toberman (Roy Stewart) who is partially turned by the Cybermen, but helps his fellow humans to defeat the Cybermen, and seal their tomb forever.

Quite enjoyable, and cool to see this early (though not the earliest) of the Cybermen. The Cybermen costumes are pretty low tech, as is the leader of the Cybermen, though the Tardis seems the same.

Well worth checking out for Doctor Who fans, especially since this was thought lost forever until it was found in Hong Kong, though many are still missing.
