Doctor Who 2006 Season 2 by Various directors, Executive Produced by Russel T. Davies, Julie Gardner and Mal Young (2006)

31 January 2007

The New New Doctor. I enjoyed Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, but I must say as soon as I started watching David Tennant I really realized that he was my favorite Doctor since the greatest Doctor, Tom Baker. Now if only they could bring Tom Baker in as the Master in the 3rd Season. That would be amazing! This is an amazing season, with the return of the Cybermen, and many aliens to encounter, as well as a new threat on Earth, Torchwood. This is a great show, and I think not only fans of the Doctor, but anyone would enjoy this excellent show.

Season 2 got it’s sneak preview with the Christmas Invasion. In this it is Christmas Eve and they have returned to Earth, Rose (Billie Piper) and the New New Doctor (David Tennant). Rose takes the Doctor to her house to stay with her mum, Jackie (Camille Coduri) because the Doctor is still wiped out from his regeneration, and unfortunately he is leaking energy that can be detected. While Rose is out with her boyfriend Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke), but they are attacked by Aliens dressed as Santa Claus. They come for the Doctor and he is awakened, but it is too early, so he is knocked out again. Then the big alien ship arrives, and seems to have control over a 3rd of the population who are about to jump from tall buildings. The new prime Minister Harriet Jones (Penelope Wilton) prepares a retaliation using a program called Torchwood (an anagram of Doctor Who) as well as talking to the aliens, but is transported to their ship, but then so is the Tardis with Rose and the Doctor, but he is still asleep. Rose comes out to help, but is useless, but then the Doctor is awake, and he fights the aliens and wins Earths freedom, but sends the ship away to never return. That is not the end of it though, because Harriet Jones calls Torchwood and they destroy the ship, making an enemy of the Doctor, and he ruins her Prime Ministership.

NEW EARTH has Rose and the Doctor heading to the future to a new earth, where they discover a hospital that has an evil secret, they are curing people by making human clones that they poison to make cures, and the people are alive and thinking. Not only that but the last human Cassandra is back, and this time takes over Rose’s body. The Doctor and Cassandra must fight through the zombie’s that will kill them with one touch, until the Doctor comes up with a cure for this new race of humans.

TOOTH AND CLAW has the Doctor and Rose ending up in hundred years in the past in Scotland and running into Queen Victoria, and a plot by a cult with werewolf alien to infect the Queen and take over England. SCHOOL REUNION has the return of 2 of the Doctor’s old Friends, the Robotic K-9 and his master Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) who was one of Tom Baker’s companions. This time they meet her in a school, where the teachers are Alien bat creatures who are using the children to try and crack the code of the universe. Micky realizes he is nothing but another K-9, and with K-9’s help they save the students, no mean feat with Sarah Jane and Rose becoming quite jealous of each other. K-9 is destroyed, but the doctor makes K-9 mark 4 for Sarah Jane before he leaves.

THE GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE has the Doctor, Rose and Mickey on a spaceship in the future, that has been damaged, and has used it’s crew to recreate itself, but it is not finished, and it has many portals open into the life of Reinette, the woman who would become Madame De Pompadour in the 18th Century France, the girlfriend of King Louis (Benjamin Turner). The Doctor shows up through her life, and she falls for him, and she for him, as he tries to save her from the Aliens, which he does, and he wants to bring her with him, but the passages make time pass differently, and she is dead by the time he gets back for her.

RISE OF THE CYBERMAN and THE AGE OF STEEL has the Doctor, Mickey and Rose end up in another dimension, with an alternate world where Rose’s father Pete (Shaun Dingwall) is still alive, but he and Jackie never had Rose in this world. In this the evil John Lumic (Roger Lloyd Pack) has created the unfeeling Cybermen, who have human brains but no emotions, and wants to upgrade all of the human race. In this world Mickey is Rickey, a freedom fighter, who is killed. And Mickey finds his grandmother who died in his world, and decides to stay after helping them defeat Lumic, though they still need to fight the rest of the Cybermen.

THE IDIOTS LANTERN has the Doctor and Rose in England in 1953 for the Queen’s Coronation, in which Rose notices too many TV antenna’s, and they find that people are having their faces erased. The Doctor chases the cops as they take in one of these people with no face, but Rose figures it out, and heads to the guy selling the Television, who has been taken over by an Alien called the wire, who sucks off Rose’s face, and this sets the Doctor out with the help of a young to save England.

THE IMPOSSIBLE PLANET and THE SATAN PIT have Rose and The Doctor in the future on a human space station on a world that is impossibly in orbit around a black hole. They find human’s who are mining to find the impossible power source, and served by a slave race of aliens, but something is happening, the devil seems to have taken over one of their number, and then the slaves. And the doctor ends up down in a bottomless pit. Rose helps the humans to beat the slaves, but the doctor goes up against the devil, but realizes his brain is in the body of one of the human’s, which Rose takes car of, and they are all saved by the Doctor in his Tardis.

LOVE & MONSTERS is about a man who is obsessed with the doctor, and joins a group of people trying to find him. Elton (Marc Warren) along with Ursula (Shirley Henderson in only a slightly lower pitched voice than in Harry Potter) have fun in the group, and start to fall for each other, but then the evil Victor Kennedy (Peter Kay) comes and regiments them to try and find the Doctor, and starts absorbing them one by one. Victor turns out to be an alien who absorbs people, and he gets Ursula, but Elton is saved by the Doctor and Rose who were coming to see why he pissed off Jackie, and they manage to safe Ursula’s face, which is locked in a piece of pavement! Strange! Ha!

FEAR HER has the doctor and Rose going to the 2012 London Olympics, and finding a strange rash of disappearances. They find out it is a young girl who has an alien inside her, that is making friends and is drawing people and making them disappear. The Doctor is taken away, but Rose manages to save the day.

ARMY OF GHOSTS and DOOMSDAY is about the death of Rose Tyler. When the pair return to Earth they find that strange ghosts have covered the Earth, and Torchwood is involved. Torchwood takes the Doctor, Rose and Jackie hostage, and they try and stop Torchwood, which has 2 alien things, a null sphere from between worlds, and a big gate that creates the ghosts. It turns out that the Cybermen from the other Earth have come through the gate using the power of the sphere because they were losing, but they aren’t the only ones. In the Sphere are 4 Dalek’s with names that escaped from the war, with a piece of TIme Lord technology, which turns out to be a prison for millions of Dalek’s and they escape and fight the Cybermen, but The Doctor realizes he can send the creatures that have passed through the gate back into it and into hell. Jackie goes to the alternate world with Mickey and Pete, but Rose decides to stay, but she almost gets sent to hell, but is saved by Pete, but stuck in the alternate universe without the Doctor. The Doctor uses all his power to project an image of himself and say goodbye, he has saved the day, but lost Rose forever.

Such an Amazing show! I really love this show. It also includes commentaries, including visual commentaries, and again has small BBC docs on each and every episode, going behind the scenes with a different aspect of production for each episode. Well worth checking out for all WHO fans. And it is so funny to see Tennat behind the scenes and realize he has such a thick Scotich accent! Wow, he drops that well!! Would be interesting to have a Scotish Doctor, I mean he had a companion who was Scotish with a kilt once, but him being Scotish…

I also want to know the budget for these BBC specials, I mean they must have aired on TV, but they have modern music, even THE KILLERS. Damn I never get anything like that when cutting behind the scenes docs! That would cost way too much!
