Chasing Amy by Kevin Smith (1997)

I loved this film when it first came out and have owned both the Criterion Laserdisc and now the DVD, but now I have some serious reservations. Even on the laserdisc I had to skip the second the last scene, the idiotic confrontation because I can’t believe anyone in that position would really be that stupid and idiotic. Sure he learns his lesson, but come on! Not only that but the story is such a mans puerile fantasy of making a gorgeous lesbian fall for him! I mean come on. Not only that this film is shot badly. I mean really plain static shots with bad lighting. Sure Kevin Smith has fun and interesting characters, as that is what he does best, but really this isn’t the best film.

REVIEW CONTAIN SPOILERS…

Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) and Banky Edwards (Jason Lee) do a comic called BluntMan and Chronic (based on Jay [Jason Mewes] and Silent Bob [Kevin Smith] though in the opposite order) that has a distributor and is doing pretty well and even has an offer for a cartoon in the works. At a comic convention they meet up with their gay black friend Hooper X (Dwight Ewell) who introduces them to his friend who does her own comic book Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams). Holden quickly starts falling for Alyssa, but on their second meeting finds out she is a lesbian, and he is crushed, and he leaves dejected. She isn’t have that though and shows up and he starts hanging out with her all the time, much to the chagrin of Banky, which comes to a head when he tells him he is in love with her. And then he tells her and she freaks out, but they get together. She becomes ostracized from her lesbian friends, but really does love Holden. Banky digs up dirt on Alyssa who lived in the next town over in Jersey, that her nickname was Fingercufs because she blew a guy while another guy fucked her in high school. Holden can’t handle it. He was fine with her screwing so many women, but not so many men, jealous. He attacks he about it and breaks up with her, then when paying off Jay and Silent Bob for their likeness rights, Bob tells the story of Amy the woman he really loved, but he blew it because she had so many sexual experiences before and he was scared that he wasn’t adequate but in fact she didn’t care, she loved him, but he blew it, and since then he has been chasing Amy. Exactly like Holden’s case, but he comes up with the worst idea of all, which is to have sex with Alyssa and him and Banky all at once, which ruins it with Alyssa because he is such a fucking moron, because she really loved him. Then we cut to a year later, at a comic convention, Banky has his own comic, and hasn’t seen Holden, till then. And then Holden goes to Alyssa and gives her his comic, Chasing Amy, which is his whole story with Alyssa, and says what he learned, and apologizes to her, a limited run comic he financed himself. And she is moved, and maybe, just maybe they will talk again.

Hmm, an OK film, enjoyable, but so uncomfortable to see such idiocy. I mean come on!!! And Affleck just isn’t that good of an actor to begin with as he has so far proven.
