An enjoyable adventure and the first appearance of the Ice Warriors an ancient race from Mars that have not been used enough. This has 2 missing episodes that had a reconstruction made from the audio and stills for VHS, but exists other than that, but has not been released on DVD as of yet.

Earth of the future at Brittanicus Base they are trying to slow the progress of glaciers that are rolling over Britain. Leader Clent (Peter Barkworth) says they will be able to stop the ice age, but the others including technician Jan Garrett (Wendy Gifford) know they are close to being forced to leave and losing Britain to the new Ice Age. Clent is pissed at a maverick scientist named Penley (Peter Sallis) who left the team. The remaining scientist Arden (George Waring) is searching for archeological finds in the glaciers and he finds an armored warrior in a block of ice. Arden doesn’t listen to Clent’s appeals to come back and help with the ioniser and instead works on digging out the man from the ice. They are watched by Penley and Storr (Angus Lennie) who have given up on Technology. When their is an avalanche, Storr has his arm badly broken.

The Doctor (Patrick Troughton), Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines) and Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling) arrive in the TARDIS outside the base, and the Doctor offers to help Clent with the Ioniser. The Doctor manages to stabilize the Ioniser, realizing the Ice Age is caused by a drop in CO2 levels after all the plant life has died.

Arden and Walters (Malcolm Taylor) arrive with the frozen man, and he realizes it is n Ice Warrior from Mars entombed since the last Ice Age. An emergency meeting is called, and no one notices that the ice on the Warrior has started to melt.

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

The creature awakens, knocking out Jamie and taking Victoria hostage.

The Doctor realizes that their could be an Ice Warrior ship under the glacier with atomic power which the Ioniser could explode the engine and destroy the base and cause the Ice Age. Jamie arrives and tells them what has happened.

Victoria learns the Ice Warrior is named Varga (Bernard Bresslaw), and he insists she helps him find his crew, where they will decide to either return to Mars or conquer the Earth.

Penley heads to the base to steal medical supplies, but sees Victoria and Varga and follows them. Varga knocks out Clent, and Penley tries to revive him, and is found by the Doctor. Penley leaves without helping on the Ioniser.

Varga finds four more Ice Warriors and starts to revive them. Zondal his lietenant (Roger Zones) sets up defenses while the others dig out their spaceship.

Penley returns to Storr with the medicine, but finds Miss Garrett who implores him to return and help them. He refuses and she pulls a gun, but Storr grabs it, and she is sent back to check on the Omega Factor. The Doctor checks the new data and finds that the Ioniser can be made more effective.

Jame and Arden go and find the Ice Warriors and tell the base, but are gunned down by Ice Warriors. Penley finds them, and Jamie is still alive and he takes him to his home. Storr goes to talk to the Ice Warriors himself.

Victoria contacts the base and tells them of the danger of the ice warriors, but Zondal aims the ships weapons at her, but is stopped by Varga, learning of the base’s concern for their engine, and uses it against them. Victoria is taken again as bate.

The Doctor goes to get her with some ammonium sulfate which will be noxious to the Ice Warriors. Victoria flees into the ice caves and is chased by an Ice warrior who is crushed under an avalanche, and she is still head by his dead claw.

Storr is killed, but Victoria is allowed to live.

Penley brings the Doctor to Jamie and he finds that Jamie’s paralysis is only temporary and so he heads to the Martian spaceship. The Doctor leaves his communicator on so that Clent can hear and talks to the Ice Warriors, and is allowed into the ship, but locked in the airlock and almost killed, but Varga releases him when he believes his motives and give VIctoria to him.

Varga believes the Ionizer is a weapon, and the Doctor lets Clent know that in an emergency he must use it to destroy the Martian ship. Varga takes the communicator and locks up the Doctor, but he sees an Ion Propulsion system.

Varga decides to destroy the base with his sonic cannon.

Penley returns to the base with Jamie and with Clent they decide to use the Ioniser, as the Doctor’s new formula has been working in other bases.

Zondal is working on the Sonic Cannon when the doctor uses the ammonium sulfate on him and he collapses, but activates the cannon as he falls.

The blast causes only minor damage, but Varga threatens Clent that he will fire again, and Clent suggests a meeting, and Varga heads for the Ioniser room. A technician shoots at the Warriors, and Varga takes the fuel from the ionizer for his ship, which starts the glaciers moving again. Penley though turns the heat up in the base, which the Ice Warriors can’t take.

The Doctor set the Sonic Cannon to only hurt Ice Warriors, and forces the Warriors to leave the base.

The Doctor returns to the base and works with Penley to recalibrate the Ioniser and to fire it at the ship. The computer things it will explode, but they get CLent to ignore it, and activate it, destroying the martial ship and stopping the glacier.

The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria take off in the TARDIS leaving as plants start to pop through the melting snow.

•••

Another enjoyable Troughton adventure. Really such a seminal doctor, it really sucks that so many of his episodes are missing!

I recently saw the trailer for this film and was quite impressed, so I decided I had to see it, and was not at all disappointed. This is a lush and impressive film, shot in sumptuous 2.35 and really showing a cool view of the artists view of the world, and of the naked female form, and being able to see beauty wherever it is. Amazingly this is literally an expansion of an 2004 academy award nominated and Tribecca film festival winning short film, which he basically made a new first and third act for and then reworked the original short for the entire cast (the original short is also included on the disc as well as a documentary on the making of it). This is certainly an art house film with a cast of quirky characters and enough bared breasts to be almost softcore, but it shows them in the context of an artist who is is using them as inspiration. A wonderful film about art and inspiration. This is a must see film.

Ben Willis (Sean Biggerstaff) is in his fourth year of art college, when he screws up and breaks up with his beautiful girlfriend Suzy (Michelle Ryan, now the Bionic Women, actually going downhill in the class of films she is in) and goes into a severe depression where he no longer sleeps, and is in a bit of a daze, only hanging out with his friend Sean Higgins (Shuan Evans) who has known since 5th grade and is a total hound dog. Ben takes a job in a night shift at a grocery store with an interesting cast of characters. The beautiful Sharon Pintey (Emilia Fox) trying to make money and pass time while she takes spanish classes so she can move to South America. The tone who things he is a stunt man Barry (Michael Dixon) and his best friend Matt (Michael Lambourne) who goes out to a movie with Sharon but pretends that he slept with her. And their strange boss Jenkins (Stuart Goodwin). All of them are finding ways to pass the time, Sharon hating to look at the clock, and Ben has his own unique way. He stops time. He stops time and wanders around the store, stripping the women naked and drawing them, using them as inspiration. passing his time by stopping time.

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

Sean spends his time between drawing the women in the store naked and dreaming of Suzy, but slowly he stops thinking of her and starts thinking of Sharon, and drawing her every chance he gets, stopping time and drawing her from every angle. He finds out from her that she is only friends with the other co-worker, and after a terrible soccer game where their boss makes the guys play soccer against a rival store, and gets his nose broken, Ben takes Sharon for coffee, and they talk and he tries to kiss her though ends up kissing her cheek. The boss then invites them to his birthday party for the next weekend, and Ben agrees to go with Sharon as her date. The boss asks Ben to get a stripper for him, and pays for it, and Ben goes with Sean to find a stripper but Ben at the strip club dreams of seeing Sharon strip. At work Sharon confirms with Ben and gives him a quick kiss, and it breaks his spell, and for the first time in 4 weeks he sleeps, and sleeps most of the day, except for a phone call from a gallery saying they want to see his work, but in reality it is co-workers playing a prank

Ben picks up Sharon and heads to the party, but Suzy is there, her boyfriend turns out to be Jenkin’s brother, and when she sees him with another girl she wants him again, but he tries to blow her off. The stripper shows up, and has a great time, and it turns out to be Sean’s first love from when he was a kid and she took money to drop trouser, maybe he finally found a girl who will not throw her drink in his face, Meanwhile Ben and Sharon have a great time, but then Ben goes up the stairs to go to the bathroom and must wait in line, and who comes out but Suzy. At the same time Barry is doing a stunt down the stairs so Sharon looks up, and sees just as Suzy kisses Ben, but turns and leaves just as he pushes her away.

Ben stops time, to try and figure out how to change things, but he knows he can’t. He tries to go to her place, but she flips out on him. All he can do is go to a gallery with a folder of the drawings he did of her, and the gallery owner looks at all the drawings of Sharon and sets up an actual meeting.

Sharon quits her job at the market, but gets an invite to Ben’s show at the gallery, and she goes. Ben is doing well, and even gets an offer from an American gallery, and when he sees Sharon tells the person he wants to go paint in South America, which is where she plans on going once she finishes her Spanish lessons, and he runs over when Sharon comes in. She sees all the drawings and paintings of her, and realizes she was wrong about Ben, and he does love her. Ben saw someone move in time when he had stopped time before, so he does it again by kissing Sharon and brings her out into the snow and kisses her in the frozen snow, showing her the beauty of the snow as he sees it.

•••••

Wow this is really a lovely film, about seeing the beauty in the world around you, and finding love. it is really a great film. And the story of how it was made, actually expanded from an award winning short film is pretty damn awesome. This is really a must see.

These guys are absolutely brilliant, and some of the funniest guys in film period. Simon Pegg and Edward Wright are brilliant writers, and the on screen team of Pegg and Nick Frost are brilliant. You can tell these 3 are best friends, and are also some of the best filmmakers around today. SHAUN OF THE DEAD is absolutely brilliant, and they have kept their end up with this film, which is absolutely outstanding. I think I might have enjoyed Shaun better, but this is certainly a close second. This is one of the most enjoyable films of the year, and an absolute must see. I picked up the HD DVD just before the format died, and I have to say it looks fantastic. Damn it makes me never want to watch DVD again.

Seargant Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is the ultimate cop in London, kicking ass and taking no beef. He has more colors by a factor of 10 than any other cop on the force, so his boss, and all the higher ups, Net Sergeant (Martin Freeman), Inspector (Steve Coogan) and Metropolitan Chief Inspector Kenneth (Bill Nighy) decide to transfer him to the smallest and safest town in England. Angel shows up in town, and before he even reports for duty, he arrests a local drunk Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) and cleans out the local bar of it’s underage drinkers. The next day at work he meets the chief, Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent) and his son, Angel’s new partner, Danny Butterman. Angel doesn’t fit in, he can never turn off, which is also the reason his ex gave up on him, and he is left with only his plant. The thing is their seem to be a lot of accidents in this award winning little town. And Nicholas has to try to fit in with the strange gang of local cops that he has to deal with every day.

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

Instantly Angel becomes suspicious of the local supermarket owner, Simon Skinner (Timonthy Dalton) who seems to make too many comments, and keeps showing up at the location of local accidents.

Slowly Nicholas Angel and Danny Butterman become friends, and Danny shows Nicholas his collection of action movies, from Point Break to Bad Boys II. And Nicholas becomes more suspicious, as their are 2 people are beheaded in a car accident, someone is blown up, and finally a women is stabbed in the throat in front of Angel with her own shears. Angel can’t seem to catch up with the bad guy though, and when he brings the police force to confront Skinner, he is made the fool, as Skinner’s leg is not hurt where the guy he was chasing was hurt. Frank Butterman tells him that is what happened to the last guy who was transfered from the city, and Nicholas really starts to think he is losing it, until he returns to his hotel room and is attacked by Skinner’s giant and retarded cart boy. Nicholas survives, and when Frank arrives he leaves him to watch the bad guy, and goes to get Skinner, but that is not all he finds.

Nicholas finds that the entire local council is in fact behind the killings, and it turns out that the Chief Inspector is behind it all, from when his wife died when trying to get the town to win the best town award. And that is the reason they have all been doing the killings, to make sure the town wins the award another year in a row. They all chase him, and Nicholas falls into tunnels under the church, and finds all the bodies of the dead people the town council have killed, and when he tries to escape, he can’t because the cart boy, and his partner Frank shows up, and Frank shoots him, and takes him away in his trunk. Frank lets Nicholas out, as he had set him up with a notebook with ketchup in it. Frank didn’t know about the killings, but does not want to harm his dad, still he lets Nicholas leave and head back to London, but on the way he goes to a gas station and sees an entire rack of DVD’s of action films, and Nicholas realizes he can’t leave.

Nicholas returns and gets the entire arsenal of weapons that they had confiscated (along with a land mine) from a local farmer, and heads into town on a horse, just as the judges for the contest are set to arrive. And Nicholas Angel starts fighting the town council, but would have been in trouble if not for Frank showing up, and lending aid, and the two take on the whole town, from the priest and on. And Frank and Nicholas head out in a car chase after Skinner and Butterman senior, and manage to catch them after a long fight and battle.

Back at the police station, the head of the neighborhood watch comes out with a huge cannon and is going to kill Angel, but Danny takes the bullet, and the mine ends up going off and leveling the station. And the Metro Inspectors show up to get Angel to take his old job back because the arrest rate is down, but he wants his new job now, and we cut to a year later and Angel is now the chief of police, working with Danny and the rest of his misfits in his new spiffy police car.

•••••

Such an incredibly fun movie, these guys are some of the best comics around, perfectly blending comedy and serious drama and action. I can’t wait for there next film, they are absolutely brilliant, and this is a must see.
