BREAKING NEWS by Johnnie To (2004)
This is the latest film from Johnnie To, and it is so great to see him finally return to doing crime films. I was getting worried for a while, but he returned to his roots with PTU and this film.
This film stars Nick Cheung, Kelly Chen Wai Lam and Richie Jen (didn’t it used to be Richie Ren?), and is a police drama that deals with the interaction with the media for the police force. Jen plays a heavily armed criminal who ends up in a gun fight with Police Office Cheung and his people, and a normal beat officer is caught, and he puts his hands up to surrender to the criminal. Hong Kong is in an uproar thinking the police can’t help them, so Chen is called in to handle the situation, and show Hong Kong how the Hong Kong Police can handle the situation. Cheung refuses to give up the case, and ends up confronting the criminals.
This was an enjoyable police drama with some decent, and fairly realistic gun fights, no spinning through the air heroic gunfights, though Jen is pretty nasty with his pistols. Interesting to see Cops and Criminals both using automatic weapons.
There is nothing deep about this
film, but I still found it really
enjoyable.
The strangest thing to me is that the cast is listed as Richie Jen, Kelly Chen Wai Lam and Nick Cheung, while I would say Nick Cheung is the lead. Oh well, I guess Richie Jen is a bigger name.
