Battlestar Galactica Season 1 by Ron Moore (2004-2005)
Just as Enterprise is ending in it’s best and final season we get the new Battlestar Galactica, which I was highly skeptical off (see my earlier review). I do like Moore from Carnivale which I love, but was highly sceptical since he only watched the first episode of Galactica, and changed 3 major male characters to women, though the show had very strong female characters. Well a season later I think this is one of the best shows on TV, though not really Galactica, thought it is slowly having more elements of it, like the home planet Kobal leading them to Earth.
I have to say I was a skeptic of this show, and didn’t really want to like it, but instead I love it. I think it is one of the best shows on television with great characters and gripping plots. It looks great and is so well done.
REVIEW CONTAINS SOMESPOILERS…

We follow the last human survivors being chases by Cylons who now have human looking cylons and people hid amongst them. They are led by Adama (Edward James Olmos) and the cancer stricken President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) who eventually is taking heavy drugs and having halucinations that show the path from their old bible stories that will lead them to earth. Then we have Adama’s son Captain Lee Apollo (Jamie Bamber), Lt. Kara Thrace, call-sign Starbuck the hotshot female pilot (Katee Sackhoff) who eventually captures a Cylon fighter and uses it to disobey orders and go back to Caprica to get the arrow of Apollo to lead them back to earth where she runs into Lt. Karl C. Agaton (Tahmoh Penikett) call sign Helo who was left on Caprica by Lt. Sharon Vaerlii call-sign Boomer (the beautiful Grace Park), but runs into her again, and she helps him to try and escape Caprica, but he learns she is a clone and a cylon, but she is pregnant with his child. And we have the scientist Sr. Gaius Baltar (James Callis) who inadvertantly helped the Cylon Number 6 (Tricia Helfer) to compromise Caprica defenses and still sees her, as she tries to turn him toward the Cylon way of believing in God. He is working on a Cylon detector and eventually becomes Vice President over the Political Terrorist Tom Zarek (Richard Hatch the original Apollo from the first show). And of course we still have chief Tyrol (Aaron Douglas) the man who is in love with Boomer but breaks up with her after one of his crew is imprissoned for covering his relationship, and he is eventually crashed on Kobol with a few others including Baltar who is being shown the first human cylon child.
My favorite part is boomer who is flipping out thinking she may be a cylon and even takes the cylon detector test, but Baltar lies and tells her she is human. She tries to kill herself but blows out her cheak and takes a suicidal mission to destroy the basestar over kobal. She succeeds but runs into others of herself there, and on her return shoots Adama multiple times. I loved all her conflict and her love affair with both Tyrol and Helo. She is the most human, and yet she isn’t, but she does seem to fight her Cylon nature.
I started off skeptical, but I love this show. It rocks. This show is amazing. I love the effects. I love the characters, and I have no idea what will happen. I love this show, and am so happy it is getting a much longer second season. Lets hope this show goes on and on. Between this and Carnivale Ron Moore has created 2 of the best shows on television. Wow. he kicks some ass.
The DVD contains the mini series, and the complete first season as well as the deleted scenes that flesh out the characters, and the behind the scenes, that aren’t too great. Still I can’t recommend this series more.
Is it just me or do the Cylons not have sex doggie style, otherwise you would see that red glow in their spine!
