Simply Actors by Ching Hing Kai and Patrick LEung Pak Kin (2007)

13 November 2007

Another ridiculous Hong Kong comedy, and starting one of the twins, that being Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin (who is actually very good in the film, too bad everything else is bad). The movie has a ton of great Cameos, but they don’t really elevate the material, nor does the fact that they put a silly comedy about acting and crowbar it into a police drama, which really doesn’t work. The film just didn’t gel, and Jim Chim Sui Man is just annoying, I know it is about overacting, but his overacting just gets totally annoying.

Chan Man Long (Jim Chim Sui Man) is a Hong Kong cop who is barely competent and would rather be pretending to be a panda for kids than fight crime. He is just an idiot, and is in an unhappy relationship with his girlfriend of 8 years (Michelle Yip Suen). The police are having problems with the mob boss Crazy Sam (Chapman To Man Chat) who killed an undercover with a message reading ‘crap acting.’ The police chief (Hui Siu Hung) has to send a cop to acting school to see if they can get a good actor to go undercover so they send the bumbling Man Long. Man Long joins an acting school, along with another new student, the soft core porn actress Dani Dan (Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin). She wants to be a better actress in her porn films.

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS…

We see Man Long trying to learn to be an actor, but he is horrible and overacts, especially for his teacher (Eric Tsang Chi Wai). He is just horrible and always overacts. Man Long eventually ends up acting in Dani Dan’s new porn film as a plumber for her favorite director (DJ Sammy).

Man Long has to do some cop work, and ends up in a Mah Jong game with Crazy Sam, who realizes he is an undercover and gives him lessons, and he escapes with the help of his classmate, the best actor in the class (Raymond WOng Ho Yin) whose father owns the parlor. Man Long then ends up back in class. He also realizes his girlfriend is cheating and breaks up with her, since he really likes Danni.

Man Long then gets real acting lessons from the janitor (Anthony Wong Chau Sang), where he learns to look at real life.

Then a gangster gets out of prison and wants money from the Mah Jong parlor owner, so Man Long and his friends pretend to give them the money and then try and snatch it back, but it of course goes bad. THe bad guy is caught, but Man Long is shot, though he pretends he was not.

Dani then gets an acting job with the director Alan Mak Siu Fai, and eventually wins an award for best actress, while Man Long now teachers other police how to act well. And he is friends with Dani who thanked him in her acceptance speach.
