AV by Edmond Pang Ho Cheung (2005)
5 August 2007A fun little film with a funny premise, but doesn’t seem to have too much depth to it, and the main interesting plot point, never really pans out, in fact it fizzles about as heavily as it could. Cool to see a young new group of actors up and coming, but they seem to have about as much depth as the shallow college losers they portray. I guess it is worth checking out, especially if you like to see Japanese AV star Manami Amamiya’s breasts, and her doing some actual acting, but overall not too much to this film.
This is the story of four loser college buddies (Wong Yan Nam [who speaks Japanese], Lawrence Chou Chun Wai [the brains of the outfit], Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung [the lover boy] and Jeffrey Chau [the fat one who wants to lose his virginity]) who hear about a class mate of his Kar Lok (Tsui Tin Yau) who was kicked out of film school for having set up a movie entirely to get a cute woman to make out with him. So they decide to get some money together to make a fake AV film with a hot Japanese AV star, Manami Amamiya, so they can have sex with her, and they take out a student loan (from Chin Kar Lok) to do it.

Basically they organize and fake a company, and when they need more money, get school students to pay them to watch. And they try and trick Manami’s Japanese Manager. At first the fatty has trouble, but when his supposedly sweet girlfriend breaks up with him, because she is pregnant with another guys baby, he goes and gets viagra, and they start having a good time, even when they need to find a new location. Meanwhile the director is trying to do something arty, but not succeeding too well.
Wong Yan Nam, starts taking Manami out, and ends up sleeping with her, and she give him a present, because supposedly he was the first to give her an orgasm, and he wants to get her out of the industry, and move to Japan with her, and hates to have his friend sleep with her. He sees her manager with another girl, and beats him up, and then tells Manami the whole truth, and she of course new it was a fake movie. They finish shooting and Lawrence Chou steals the tapes form the director, so it can’t be released, and they send Manami home. And it turns out they all got the present from her, so it was all a lie.
And Lawrence goes to a job interview, and finally knows what to say when they ask him why he would be useful to the company.

A cool premise and the characters area good for a few laughs, and damn if Manami isn’t the cutest porn star you will ever see. An ok film, though it still felt a little flat to me, maybe because I didn’t really like any of the characters all that well. And the whole porn star wanting to get out, and not talking to her father who doesn’t know she is in porn as she left to be an actress, was interesting, but all falls apart, when we realize she bullshits all the guys she sleeps with. Ah well.
